At one time, the Lamanai Ruins were part of a large Mayan city. The Crocodile City is a fitting name for this excursion. Lamanai comes from the Mayan term for "submerged crocodile". It is also appropriately named for the large number of reptiles that live on the banks of the New River leading to it.

To start this excursion, you will board an air-conditioned bus for the ride to Orange Walk Town which is north of Belize City (about 60 minutes). When you reach Orange Walk you will ride a riverboat 45 minutes upriver to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins. You will want to keep your eyes open and your camera handy during your boat ride. Be ready for many great photo opportunities capturing hundreds of wild animals including Morelet crocodiles, toucans, iguanas, spider monkeys and much more. You will find some of the overhanging air plants and orchids to be stunning.

The first thing you will do when you reach the ruins is to enjoy a tasty Belizean lunch which is provided. Your expert guides will take you out to explore various temples, structures, and pyramids. Starting at a small museum that will take you back 2000 years in Mayan history, you will discover exquisite artifacts. Over 800 structures make up the ruins and some are still untouched in the undergrowth.

You will see the famous Mayan ball court and three very impressive temples that have been restored. You will visit the Jaguar Temple, known for its boxy Jaguar decoration. You will be snapping photos of the Mask Temple, which is decorated with a 13 foot stone mask of an ancient Mayan king. And of course the most scenic of all the High Temple, allowing you to stand at the top of it for an amazing view of the Belize jungle. You will also want to pay special attention to the Ceiba Trees for that perfect photo opportunity. The Howler Monkeys can be observed relaxing in these enormous trees!

The Mayans built a Stelae, which is a type of statue where the remnants of two Catholic Churches once stood. It was thought to be a renouncement of faith to Christianity. The Mayans protested against the churches and burnt them to the ground. You will have about 3 hours at the ruins.

Now you have become an expert of Belize History and the Mayan Civilization! When you are finished discovering the Lamanai Ruins you will head back to Belize City the same way you came to return safely to your ship.

This excursion is only available for cruise ship guests.

We had a great time and (the owner) actually was our driver from the port and back. (He) is a local but spend many years in the USA, but decided to come back to Belize his home country. He was very funny and knowledgeable about the country side. We meet Collin at the boat pier on the river and had a great time. He is a local that was born and raised on the river. The captianed the boat like second nature and pointed out all the wild life and different areas along the river. We passed a VERY LARGE farm that was home to a Mennonite community. He also would find crocs, bats, different birds, etc to stop and point out. Once we got to Lamanai we unloaded the boat and set up our spot at the picnic shelter. Oh we were a group of 11 (just us). Collin took us around the city and explained all the different sites. He also pointed out howler monkey families in the trees. He explained the life style of the Mayan and how it would have been. This city was one of the longest lasting ones for like 3000 years. There is a lot to see and learn about. After touring the site we had lunch which was rice and beans, chicken, slaw, salad, and plantains. This was a great local lunch and there was plenty for us that we even shared with the local vendors. Great tour and great people to work with.

Lengthy but worth it.

Before you book, make sure you don’t plan any shopping along with the excursion as it takes every bit of the day. You are met in a very timely manner just outside the terminal and whisked away in a small group, unlike the excursions booked by the cruise line that filled a bus load. It is an easy 1 hour 20 minute drive to the river, where you will board a small speedy river boat to take you on an hour trip to the ruins. The meal is excellent, but the Pico is VERY Hot, so be warned. Roberto is a very knowledgeable expert on the ruins and it takes a good hour to see it all. The Howler Monkeys are awesome and other than making sure they don’t urinate on you, are cute. There is an easier step to the top of the big temple so anyone can climb if so inclined. There is a museum and gift shop, but hurry as you will only have a few minutes to spare after the hour boat ride and over hour van trip back. Very educational and worth the hurry

Roberto JR. and Javier were awesome guides! This is a very rustic tour and you will need mosquito spray! The howler monkeys were amazing and the ruins did not disappoint. I highly recommend this tour but keep in mind that you will not have any time to do anything else while in port. The drive is an hour there and back and the boat ride is also an hour there and back which eats up most of the time. Belize is amazing and I hope to go back again. Thank you for a perfect cruise stop Roberto Jr. and Javier!

Just the 4 of us!

There were just the 4 of us for the tour.. It was wonderful from the beginning. Sidney (sorry if I spelled it wrong), our driver was wonderful. He was so friendly and full of great information. Got us to the river without a problem. We were met by Colin, our tour guide. He was wonderful and informative. He was very patient with me since I was the oldest and slowest of the group. I couldn't have asked for a better guide. Lunch was fantastic. Got us back to port well within the time for us to catch the last tender or two back to the ship.. Please, please book this tour. You won't regret it!

This excursion was wonderful. The excursion was easy to find once off the ship. We enjoyed the ride to the river, the boat ride and finally the Mayan Ruins. Colin and Randy, the tour guides were very knowledgable about the river and the ruins.

Wonderful Private Tour
     5/5 Visited in January 2015

This tour sounded a lot like the tour available on ship, but promised to have a few less people, so we booked it expecting a tour group of 10-12. It was a delightful surprise to have only the four of us who booked the tour enjoy a full, interesting day with essentially two private guides! We were picked up promptly off the ship by our guide whom we easily identified as described in our trip confirmation. Quickly loaded into a small van, we left Belize city headed for the river. Quick aside for fellow Rotarians - there is a roundabout with a banner size bronze of the Rotary 4 way test on this road - very cool to see how we are appreciated! Adrian our tour guide was a wealth of information and we did not let him stop talking all the way to the boat dock, peppering him with questions about life in his country, the ecology, the wildlife and anything else we could think of to ask. Once at the boats, we were again loaded into a neat small boat, whose pilot did an amazing job of shepherding us down the river to the ruins. We stopped multiple times, as his eagle eyes spotted wildlife that he quietly got us up close and personal to see. At the ruins, we had a lovely tour, getting to see each of the separate areas and out guide had pictures of the excavated sites as they had been at various stages in ancient times. Back at our original launch site, we were treated to lunch made locally, then driven back and dropped right at the cruise port entry. It couldn;t have been a better day.

Loved it!

Loved the ruins, the speed boat ride and the beautiful scenery! Don't forget to take a rain tote, and a little mosquito spray. It was a little cool on an overcast day. Going into the rain forest, it may be overcast anyway. Saw many crocodiles and a few monkeys. The ruin were great.

Interesting and educational
     5/5 Visited in September 2013

My wife and I both teach high school. We were pleasantly surprised that it was not only interesting but also we both learned more than we expected to about the Mayan civilization. Our guide spoke fluent English and was extremely articulate. The best part about the entire excursion was the scenery! We both were curious why more people were not on our tour...this excursion was the best by far of our entire cruise.
