See and do it all in Funchal! Toboggan ride, scenic 4x4 ride to see the mountains, sea cliffs and valleys, taste local foods and Madeira wine, history and more!
After meeting your English speaking driver/guide just outside your Funchal cruise terminal, you will board your 4X4 jeep vehicles with roll back roofs offering not only views to the side and below, but also above. There are seats facing forward as well as side to side offering everyone a view.
Setting out from the waterfront, your driver will pass by the Palacio de Sao Lourenco (St. Lawrence Fort/palace) and the local market as you begin to climb the hillside to reach Monte, the hilly parish located on the outskirts of Funchal. Here you will partake in a local tradition that has become famous over the years. The drive to Monte takes approximately 45 minutes.
What goes up must come down! Enjoy a fun ride on a traditional toboggan sled just as people have done here since 1850. The two-seater wicker sleds have wooden runners on the bottom that slide over the well-worn downhill streets. The course is just over a mile long and takes approximately 10 minutes under the guidance of two runners who push, pull and guide the sled from behind. Guests of all ages will enjoy this fun activity!
Departing Monte, you will drive west for approximately 30 minutes along the coast to reach the dramatic Cabo Girao (Cape Girao) lookout. Take time for a photo stop out over the scenic coastline and the sea cliffs from your vantage spot more than 1900 feet above sea level.
For the next hour, your driver will take you along old roads and off road to see awe-inspiring landscapes, through lush hillsides, small villages and up to a summit of 4000 feet to show you the dramatic scenery of this rugged island.
A quick stop at a local cafe in one of the villages will give you a chance to stretch and enjoy a local Poncha (lemon, honey and rum), cherry liqueur, fruit juice, hot chocolate or tea. Relax and enjoy!
You will wind through hills, terraced with orchards and vineyards, to reach the village of Estreito de Camara de Lobos, located in a valley 1600 feet above sea level. Here, you will stop for a traditional Madeiran meal where farm to table is nothing new. You will have an option of meat or fish prepared by simple traditional recipes, homemade bread, sweets and wine, all which make for a memorable relaxed dining experience. Total time at the restaurant is approximately 1 hr 45 minutes.
Then drive to the charming seaside village of Camara de Lobos. Huddled around a small bay, you can see the small colorful fishing boats pulled up on the rocky beach. The village was often the subject of paintings by Sir Winston Churchill, who wintered on Madeira after the war.
No trip to Madeira would be complete without sampling the islands most famous, oldest and most popular export, the Madeira wine. Since the 1500's, explorers heading to uncharted lands stopped in Madeira to stock up on the local wine. During your 30-minute visit, you will have the opportunity to taste some of the famous wine.
To wind up your adventurous day, it is a 40-minute drive back to your Funchal cruise port, including a photo stop over Funchal, along the way.
