View rain forest valleys, waterfalls, scenic coastline and even wild horses on this intimate small group excursion to the Hamakua Coast and Waipio Valley.

Your guide will meet you right at the Hilo cruise pier where you will depart with your small group of no more than 12 guests on a scenic adventure. Throughout the entire day, your guide will be giving you interesting information about the area and the sites you are seeing.

First stop is the Liliuokalani Japanese Gardens that overlook Hilo Bay. The 30-acre gardens (12.14 hectares), dedicated in 1917 are named after the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. As you drive through, you will see pagodas, fish ponds, Japanese bridges and a teahouse.

Your group will continue next to Rainbow Falls, located just north of town. Depending on recent rainfall in the mountains, it may be a gushing torrent or a more peaceful twin falls.

Continue north to Honoli'i Beach Park. It is the most popular surfing location in this part of the island and very beautiful - keep the cameras ready.

Driving just a bit further north, you will come to Onomea Bay, where a four-mile stretch of road is considered one of the most scenic drives on the Big Island. The tropical setting is accented with mango, Red African Tulip, banana and several types of palm trees. Stops are made wherever possible for photos.

Continue along the coast to Honomu, where we turn inland and head for Akaka Falls State Park. The drive is approximately 20 minutes. On arrival, follow your guide on the approximately half mile hike up to 100 foot Kahuna falls (33 meters), and just a bit further, the thundering 442 foot Akaka Falls (134.7 meters), where it plummets into a gorge. Total time at the park is around 50 minutes.

The dramatic coast road passes farms growing taro, tropical fruits, coffee, flowers, and cattle. Up until the 1960's, this was a sugar cane plantation with Hakalau as its main town.

At Laupahoehoe, a photo stop is made at the memorial marking the 1946 Tsunami that claimed four teachers and 20 students.

30 minutes further along the coast is Honoka'a where the main road turns to the west side of the island. The Waipio Valley lookout is your next stop. From this viewpoint, you will overlook the "Valley of the Kings" and the rugged, breathtaking views of the coast.

To break up the one hour drive back to Hilo, a photo stop is made at Wai'uli black sand beach, where you may spot Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Totally worth it

We loved this excursion, we were only 8 in our group, ideal since we were running away from big crowds. Our guide, i'm sorry I cannot remember his name (it started with an R), was the best!! He provided all the information we needed to know and did it in such an interactive way not tedious at all, we even had a questions contest and one of my children won! This was some of the most amazing scenery imaginable. Our photos did not even come close to capturing the beauty of the waterfall and the other stunning countryside. Thanks to the reservations girl at Shore Excursioneer for helping us on booking this trip.
