Meet your Ketchikan Treasure Hunt Cruise Excursion guide on the central cruise pier in downtown Ketchikan. From here, you will transfer approximately 30 minutes away along a scenic route to the cove where your excursion boat waits. Here, you will receive safety information and put on life jackets. Boarding your open motorized ocean raft, you will follow the coast of Clover Passage on your 30-minute ride to a remote island in the Tongass National Forest. Keep your eyes open as you may see wildlife such as bald eagles, whales, sea lions, and seals.
Upon arrival at the island, all guests will receive an orientation on Geocaching from the treasure hunt shore excursion guide before you divide into small groups. Each group will receive a Global Positioning System (GPS) device already preloaded with the coordinates needed to find their caches.
Each treasure hunt excursion group will receive a different coordinate to start the hunt and they will be searching for their treasure on the beach and along a well-maintained boardwalk trail through a beautiful old growth rain forest. Then, you're off.
You will have approximately one hour to finish the hunt. Each time you discover the cache, your GPS will reveal coordinates for the next cache and so on, until you reach the ultimate destination cache.
Your excursion guide will meander among the groups to assist as needed and provide interesting information about the botanic species native to the area and historical information about the importance of the forest to the early Natives of the region. Keep your eyes open for potential wild and marine life. Bring your camera and binoculars!
Once your group has found its treasure, you will spend approximately 20 minutes to enjoy an Alaska-style snack of Clam chowder, smoked salmon and light beverages by the campfire. Take the time to soak in the wonderful vistas. You will then return to the open-air boat for your 30 minute return to the mainland where your transportation will be waiting for the 30 minute transfer back to Ketchikan and your cruise ship terminal.
