After departing from your Ketchikan Alaska cruise pier, you will have a scenic 30-minute drive to a secluded mountain lake via a motor coach. After meeting your canoe excursion guides, you will receive life jackets, a safety orientation and instructions of how to handle the canoe. You will then board the Native American-Alaska-style 37-foot, 20-passenger canoes that are fast, stable, and easy to maneuver.
An experienced shore excursion guide will navigate the canoe while discussing the unique natural and native history of the Ketchikan area. Keep your eyes peeled for Alaska wildlife along the shore. Although wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, this far from town, the possibilities are much higher.
The lake sits in part of the Tongass National Forest, the largest National Forest in the United States, and is ideal for canoeing and scenic viewing. Keep your eyes open for wildlife along the shoreline. You will paddle for approximately 60 minutes.
After the Canoe part of this Ketchikan cruise excursion, we stop for an Alaskan-style snack, including clam chowder, rolls, jam, smoked salmon, juice, hot chocolate, coffee and water is included. After the rest, your Alaska excursion guide will lead you on a short nature walk highlighting the flora and fauna of the Alaskan rain forest. The hiking trail is predominantly level and there are small sections of boardwalk as well as packed dirt.
After your hike, return to your canoe and paddle back to your starting point which is approximately 30 minutes paddling. Here your transportation will be waiting to return to your Ketchikan cruise ship pier. This Ketchikan Canoe and Hike Excursion is a rare opportunity to explore Southeast Alaska in the manner of its original explorers and early culture!

Our best memory of Ketchikan
We were fortunate to have a young man named Doren as our guide. The trip he conducted reflected his strong interests in environmental science, wildlife and Alaska itself. Imagine visiting a spot where a bear hibernates . . . after a leisurely canoe ride across a completely unspoiled lake. The organisation of the trip was great, as was the salmon lunch.
