Alaska Native art and traditions are the highlight of this perfect combination of history and adventure cruise shore excursion from Ketchikan Alaska. After meeting your Alaska shore excursion guide in downtown Ketchikan, you will depart the Ketchikan cruise pier and travel to the Totem Bight State Historical Park, located 20 minutes north of Ketchikan. This 11-acre historic Alaska park features a collection of ancient totem poles that found throughout Alaska and brought to Ketchikan. Those that were in good enough shape to repair were. Those that had decayed to a point they were not salvageable, had hand-carved reproductions made. There is also a replica of a clan house. The park is set in a lush rainforest and your Ketchikan cruise excursion guide will explain what a totem can tell during your approximately 1 hour 45-minute visit.

Next, you will take a scenic 20-minute drive to Lake Harriet Hunt where you will get to experience another use the natives made out of the local trees. Your guides will provide you with life jackets and a safety orientation. You will then board your Native-style canoe and set out on a pristine mountain lake. As you paddle, your Ketchikan Canoe Excursion guide will tell you how the natives traveled the long distances of the southeast Alaska waterways in large carved canoes.

The canoes are easy-to-paddle, 37-foot, 20-passenger Native-style canoes. Your 40-minute paddle will follow the scenic shoreline and you should keep your eyes open for local wildlife. Although sightings are not a guarantee, they are common. During your canoe adventure part of this Alaska excursion, a stop will be made to stretch your legs and enjoy an Alaskan-style snack, including clam chowder, rolls, jam, smoked salmon, juice, hot chocolate, coffee and water is included. Your guide will also lead a short 20-minute nature walk highlighting the flora and fauna of the local rain forest.

Departing the campsite, you will paddle approximately 40 minutes back to your starting point where your transportation will be waiting for the 30-minute return to your Ketchikan Alaska cruise ship pier.

Outdoor fun

With this tour we were able to understand and learn about the local cuisine, customs, art, traditions and history all in a natural environment, outdoors, which allowed us to admire the Alaskan scene. The best way to fully experience everything Alaska has to offer is with a expert guide and luckily we had Jensen as our guide who made this a fun and educational visit. Getting everyone to synchronize and paddle at the same time was a bit challenging (and funny) at first. On the way back it was much simpler and think everyone left as expert canoeists. Highly recommend this excursion to everyone. (translated)

Wonderful excursion

Totem Bight State Historical Park has many beautiful, ancient totem poles that our informative guide let us through. Then we headed to Lake Harriet Hunt, a secluded, serene mountain lake, that we canoed across for a nature hike through towering Sitka spruce and western hemlock. It did not matter one bit that it poured and poured. I had a marvelous time and I learned a whole lot.
