This is a great combination of Mayan ruins and sightseeing in Merida with shopping opportunities as well on this cruise shore excursion from Progreso, Yucatan. You will check in right at the cruise pier - your guide will have a sign, welcome you and get you on board the air conditioned transport to start your fun Progreso cruise shore excursion day.

The Mayan ruins of Dzibilchaltun, pronounced dzeeble-chal-toon, are located just south of the town of Progreso so travel time is not long. Your federally certified and English speaking guide will be giving you an informative commentary and answer any questions you might have throughout the day.

Once at the Dzibilchaltun site, you will get to see many important buildings of this amazing Mayan culture. The most famous structure is the Temple Of The Seven Dolls, so named because of seven small dolls found when the temple was discovered under the ruins by archaeologists in the 1950s. On the day of the Spring equinox, the sun rises and shines directly through one window of the temple and out the other. There is also a large fresh water sinkhole,

After touring the ruins, you head to Cenote de XLacah. You may also see the ruins of a 16th-century Spanish church built at the site after the conquest. There is also a visitor center with maps, restrooms and gift shops as well as a renovated museum housing Mayan artifacts that you may tour.

After your guided tour of the Dzibilchaltun Mayan ruins, your transportation will take you just a few miles to the city of Merida where you will get to see a mix of colonial architecture and modern culture with one of the largest central historical districts of any city in Mexico. Your guide will take you through the city and tell you some of its history and folklore. See the Monument to the Yucatan for the Caste War, the House of Montejo built in 1549 and the 19th century Government palace to name a few.

You will have some browsing time for souvenirs before your transportation will take you back to the Progreso cruise pier.

This was a great excursion. The tour guide was very friendly and shared lots of information about the Mayans and the ruins as well as the history of Merida when we went to the city. It was an enjoyable time. There were lots of great sights and shopping.

Took the excursion recently, visited the Mayan Ruins, this was our first time in a cenote (sink hole) wish we could spend more time there. Visited Merida City, the main park, church and the main venue of Montejo. Our guide was very knowledgable giving us lots of information and pointing the sites of interests. I wish the tour were long enough to explore the sites a little bit longer.

Beware of the exchange rate
     2/5  May 2017
We just came back from a Carnival Triumph cruise on 5/18/2017. Ivan was a good guide. His accent is very THICK so you must listen very closely to discern what is being said. Really enjoyed the tour until the end. We had an opportunity to either tour the city of Merida or get something to eat from an authentic Mexican restaurant that Ivan recommended. The ruins had us exhausted so we opted for the meal. The food was atrocious, and on top of that we were cheated. Peso was 18.67 to 1 US dollar but they said it was 16.00. Ivan told us the meal would be between 11 and 12 dollars per person but my husband paid $43 for the two of us. When I argued about the exchange rate, everyone pretended not to understood English......conveniently. I fault Ivan for recommending a place that cheated us. We did however, tip the bus driver;who got us to our destination safely and without incident.

Ivan was our tour guide. He was very passionate and knowledgeable about the Mayan ruins and culture. My wife and I think this was one of the best tours we have ever been on. The ruins were impressive and the city of Merida was very beautiful.

Nice day that included Mayan ruins and sightseeing in Merida
     4/5  October 2013
We found the city of Merida to be a very pleasant surprise. There was so much colonial architecture. I would like to spend more time here sometime in the future. The ruins at Dzibichaltun were fascinating. We spent just the right amount of time there. The photos we took do not serve it justice. Beautiful there and so worth seeing.
