A wonderful introduction to the history and culture of Jerez and Cadiz - see the best highlights of Southern Spain's 2 best cities
Your guide will be waiting just a short distance from your cruise pier. You will depart the pier area of Cadiz and travel over the new bridge towards Jerez, approximately 30 minutes away. As you make your way from the coast inland, marshes and fields will soon be replaced with the vineyards of some of the oldest wineries in the Jerez region.
On arrival to Jerez, your guide will lead you to a 90-minute walking exploration that includes Plaza del Arenal, exterior visits to San Miguel church, San Marco church, the Alcazar, the Cathedral and Plaza del Cabildo. Depending on how fast your small group proceeds, if time allows, a visit to the Market or the Palace House may be added.
Your guide will then give you 90 minutes of free time on your own. You can visit the Alcazar, a former Moorish fortress from the 11th century. Admission is approximately 5 euro and it is self guided. Another option is to taste sherry at nearby Tio Pepe or Bodega Lustau. Sherry tastings range from 13 - 16 euros, depending on how many glasses of sherry or tapas you wish to include over the 90 min visit. Or enjoy a cafe for a bite of lunch or do some shopping. The choice is yours. Admission fees and the cost of lunch or beverages is not included in the excursion price.
After the break, you will rejoin your guide for the drive back to Cadiz where you will be treated to a panoramic view through the city - approximately 45 minutes. Some of the sites you will drive by including the Puerta de Tierra, Campo Sur, La Caleta Bay, San Sebastian and Santa Catalina Castle, the Cathedral, Falla Theatre, the Roman Theatre, Genoves Park, Alameda Apodaca and ending at the Plaza Espana, a few minutes walk from the cruise pier.
From here, for those guests up to it, your guide will begin an approximately 60 minutes guided walk to see the sites easier to reach by foot. Stroll through the Plaza Mina, Plaza San Francisco, along Calle Ancha, past flower sellers and the Central Market. Make a quick stop inside the Casino Gaditano to see its interior, much of which dates back to 1888. Then continue your walk through the Populo Quarter and past the Admiral House, Town Hall and Cathedral. Your guide will then walk you back to the cruise pier.
