This is a unique Costa Maya shore excursion for certified divers to help the Caribbean reefs. Hunt Lionfish on a one tank SCUBA dive with experienced guides. Your catch will be prepared for a tasty local-style ceviche to enjoy afterwards!

The lionfish are destroying the coral reefs in the Caribbean. They are native to the Indian Ocean but escaped an aquarium that was damaged by a tropical storm. With no natural predators, it has been causing major problems ever since. They are overrunning the reefs, preying on native species of marine life and the reefs are slowly being destroyed. The only way to help the reefs is to hunt them.

Lionfish are actually very pretty to look at with their signature red, white and black strips and flowing fins. They can live up to 15 years and grow up to 2 lbs and 18 inches long.

You only need to be a certified diver with 35 dives (please bring your log book) and the last dive within the past 8 months. Please read all restrictions to make sure you qualify. The local experienced, PADI divers/guides will teach you all of the basics. They will show you how to use the pole spear called a Hawaiian Sling. With your instructor's guidance, you will soon be helping protect the reefs!

The lionfish are not aggressive and live in the shallow reefs making it easy to hunt them. After you dive and hunt, the fun continues as the staff will prepare the freshly caught lionfish in a typical dish of ceviche. Sit back and relax on a beach break as you enjoy this very tasty fish. After lunch, you may stay at the beach area and make your way back to the cruise terminal at your leisure and expense.

• NOTE-gear rental is available on site. Full set of equipment is $25.00 USD to be paid directly to the operator. Please make a note in customer comments when placing your order that you will need equipment or you may bring your own.

• Please pay attention to restrictions and requirements for this excursion, no refund will be granted if requirements are not met.
• We suggest you bring your swimsuit, towel, sun protection, cash for the shuttle, tips, other purchases, etc.
• There is a minimum of 2 divers needed.

Where we meet

For this Costa Maya Lionfish Hunt SCUBA Dive and Tasting, you will meet after a short shuttle ride from your cruise pier. All details will be printed on your Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket.

Excursion Restrictions

• You must present your current dive certification card with a minimum of 35 logged dives and your last dive within the past 8 months.
• Minimum participation age is 15 years old.
• This Costa Maya Lionfish Hunt SCUBA Dive and Tasting Excursion may involve risks. We suggest you check with your elected person of choice to see if these possible risks might affect you.

Excursion FAQ

Cancellation

• Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
• Your ship skips/misses the port.
• Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
• A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
  
• Cancellations/deposit refund requests that do not comply with the above may not be subject to refund.
• Refunds may be subject to a service charge fee as determined by the payment processor, please refer to Terms and Conditions for more information.
