The Hawaiian islands are all part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and were created by volcanic action rising from the sea floor. The youngest island, the Big Island of Hawaii is more than 400,000 years old. It is made up of two volcanoes. Wai'anae, at just over 4000 feet, is the highest. Ko'olau,(windward) is now more of a coastline than a volcano as more than half of it slid beneath the sea in prehistoric times. In the last 500,000 years, baby volcanoes have emerged from the caldera of Ko'olau, creating several Oahu landmarks. These include Hanauma Bay, Punchbowl Crater and Hawaii's most famous volcanic tuff cone, Diamond Head.
