The town of Porto lies just south of the port of Leixoes in the northwestern coast of Portugal. Visitors are treated to very nice, mild weather during the summer months where temperatures average 77.5F (25.3C). The beach area is always a bit cooler due to the sea breezes.
Porto (also known as Oporto) is one of the oldest European cities dating back to 300 BC. UNESCO awarded it as a World Heritage Site in 1996. What once started off as an outpost for the Roman Empire is now a hot spot due to its beaches and culture.
The area is best known for its port wines. Vineyards and port production are popular tourist attraction and shore excursions to both see and taste. Vila Nova de Gaia is one of the oldest and largest producers. Some of the other things that come to mind when people think of Porto are it's massive 6 bridges throughout the city. Getting around in Porto is easy. And you will want to get out and see it all. Guests will see numerous sculptures ranging in size from big to giant in public areas. The architecture cannot be missed. The Ribeira (Riverside) District and its medieval architecture and narrow cobblestone streets. A stop in the Francisco Church to admire the lavish baroque interior. Some of the other highlights include the Palacio de Bolsa which is a 19th-century structure and now the stock market. The Porto Cathdral is the oldest standing structure in the city. The current building was constructed approximately in 1110 but evidence shows portions of it date back to between the 5th and 6th century. Check out include the Church of Cedofeita with its Romanesque style.
If you are more into the arts, there is an impressive music hall, Casa de Musica and numerous museums. For the foodies, you will want to try the local Porto specialty, a francesinha sandwich. This colossal sandwich consists of cured ham, sausage and steak drenched in melted cheese with hot tomato and beer sauce.
