After lunch, it's time to head to the Belize Zoo! In 1983, the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center started by providing a home for wild animals that were being used in making documentaries about tropical forests. It wasn't long after the zoo opened that it was realized that visitors of Belize knew very little about the various species of wildlife in this country. This is what sparked the promise to develop the tiny zoo into a vibrant wildlife educational center.
Now it exhibits over 150 animals of over 45 species, all native to Belize. The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center sit on 29 acres of grassland, keeping animals that have been orphaned, rescued, and even born at the zoo. They have received animals as donations from other zoos and care for animals needing rehabilitation. Visiting the zoo is a wonderful way of being introduced to the animals of Belize and learning how important it is to protect the environment that sustains them. Come and enjoy one of the many gifts that Mother Nature has given to Belize! After your excursion, the transportation will take you back to the cruise tender pier.
