Description

  • Round trip transportation from your cruise ship terminal area in Costa Maya!
  • Air conditioned, fully licensed and insured transportation!
  • English speaking certified guides!
  • Entrance into the ruins at Chacchoben!
  • Unlimited bottled water and soft drinks onboard the transportation!

Your Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Cruise Excursion in Costa Maya port will start right outside your Costa Maya cruise ship terminal where your friendly guide and transportation will be waiting for you. The drive to Chacchoben Mayan Ruins is approximately 50 minutes, but the English speaking shore excursion guide will be giving you lots of information about the Mayans, the Chacchoben ruins and Mexico. You will ride in air-conditioned comfort on the way there.

When you arrive, you will receive a guided tour of the grounds that are surrounded by lush jungle vegetation. The jungle truly had enveloped Chacchoben after the Mayans left. The Mayan ruins at Chacchoben (The Place of the Red Corn) were only discovered in 1972 by the American archaeologist Peter Harrison. Excavation began in 1994 by the National Institute of Anthropology and History and the ruins opened to the public in 2002.

The main structures at Chacchoben date back to between 200-700AD. More is being learned about this site as more is excavated. To date only 5 buildings have been fully revealed. What has been called The Great Basement, was believed to be the sight of religious, civil and astronomy science events.

Get a true feel for the Mayan lifestyle and civilization must have been like. Wrap yourself in the beauty at Chacchoben. The transportation will take you back to your Costa Maya pier at the end of your fun filled day cruise excursion to the Costa Maya Chacchoben Mayan Ruins.

An unforgettable lifetime experience that was filled with historical education. I think our tour guide was Elicio, and he was fantastic!! He gave us a lot of historical info, as well as, present day info. We even got a chance to witness spider monkeys swinging in the trees.

Honestly, Carlos and Israel were the reasons this excursion was so great. They were informative, engaging, and non-stop funny. We learned so much about the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins and the Mayan civilization. If you go, you definitely have to try the pineapple with the chili powder. It tasted amazing. The banana bread and mango was amazing as well. Your taste buds will thank you. All the beer and snacks along the way only cost a dollar each. This is a great family excursion. Getting through the port and to the meeting spot was a little confusing but everyone who worked in the port knew where it was and were able to direct us.

My family enjoyed this excursion so much! The highlight of this excursion was the pineapple from the ladies on the side of the road. When they ask if you want some, load up! Its amazing, unlike anything we have here in the states. The bus was decent and the ac worked well. Our guide Carlos was so nice and very informed. The ruins were amazing, Carlos was there to help some older guest with the steep stairs, showed us about the different plants and the history. He also made the bus ride fun. This was a great experience!

The ruins are awesome especially since you can climb them & explore. Our guide, Israel, was terrific. He kept us hydrated, plenty of water, the vehicle was a new van & the air conditioning was heaven. Israel bought everyone fresh pineapple on our way back to the port then took us to the beach for shopping & lunch. He was so sweet to us. He even stayed with me when I fell on the 1st ruin & messed up my knee while our tour guide finished the tour for our group. Also, my husband got I'll & did not take the excursion so Mayra did not charge me for his ticket. They are super people. The only thing I would advise besides sun block is Shoreexcursioneer says to meet 100 yards passed the port gate at a building on the right. It is actually at least 200 yards & is at the exit of the parking area. There are rides to take you there, just look for the signs inside the port saying booked tours.

Step Back in time to imagine what Mayan Culture in Chacchoben was between to 200-700 AD. Our informative guide Gus helped make the Chacchoben come alive with talk of the era, culture and ways of the Mayan society. He was warm, friendly and knowledgeable. Making the community life so real from the temple to the community areas. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole tour and had plenty of time to explore. Our driver Oz brought cold bottled water to our last place on the walking tour which was much appreciated. Thank you Shore Excursioneer for this high quality affordable option for Cruisers to participate in local culture.

I had a wonderful time during this excursion. Our tour guide, I think his name was Elicio, was absolutely fantastic! He told us all about the ancient culture. He even showed us different trees and how they were used. I was thoroughly impressed! We even had a chance to get fresh cut fruits from the local women... we got some really sweet pineapples, mangoes, and papayas!

Had a great time on this excursion. Tour guide was excellent, never rushed and learned a lot about the local area. Local food at the ruins and the pineapple from the roadside stand was excellent. Only challenge was finding the meeting spot. It is a ways outside the port marketplace; the 100 yards past the security checkpoint that is referred to on your ticket is outside the compound.

This was the first excursion we've booked outside of the cruise line so we were very cautious. I can safely say I'll be booking more outside excursions!! We had a little trouble finding the meeting point at first. The description didn't really match where we were going. Head out of the main gate and head towards the replica mayan ruins and you'll see the meeting spot. The people from (the local operator) were fantastic. Our drivers were amazing and the tour of the ruins was well worth the drive. They had plenty of water for us to drink (thankfully!). On our way back, the driver stopped at a roadside stand so we could buy fresh pineapple, mangos and papaya. Never had pineapple with chilli powder before! So good! They dropped us in the town for a couple of hours so we went and had a snack at one of the beach restaurants. (We even picked up a bonus Geocache that we didn't think we'd get!). They picked us up right on time and took us back to the port. I would definitely recommend this excursion! Thanks for making our first trip to Costa Maya enjoyable.

It was easy to find the company. Once ya get out of the terminal got to walk to the end. Everyone was so nice and professional and considerate. They really went above and beyond to help or make our trip memorable. We learned so much. So we get there and have time to use the facilities which the location does have a tip jar (normally you have to pay to use help keep up facilities(also no tp in the toilets plumbing is not made to handle that) Our guide Carlo, he told us about the places and answered some questions. We got to have authentic Tamales was super good and the stoos in the side of the road for fresh pineapple I think from the Mayans and the small shop with 1.00 beers. He also took us to town for shopping we got to enjoy a lot more than expected. We loved Costa Maya. (Also get passport stamped at Diamond International)

This was our first tour with Shore Excursioneer. We were very confused looking for the meeting place to start the tour. The directions were a little vague, once we got off the ship. I would recommend a map along with our tickets showing exactly where to go. Since we did not book directly through the cruise line they do not allow the other tour guides on the port property, so you need to exit the entire port onto the street. There we found Carlos and Gimer and our tour began. They have plenty of cold drinks for us waiting. We loaded up in a very comfortable van and started the tour. Carlos was so informative about the island and answered all the questions we asked. He was so kind as to stop along the way and pick up fresh local pineapple for us to try. We also stopped at a local store to pick up some snacks for the kids. Once we got to the Mayans ruins, he was very informative and answered all of our questions. Carlos was very informative about the ruins as was Gimer, carrying around a cooler full of cold waters and umbrellas in case we needed shade. The ruins were very interesting, but there was lots of history along the way also that we learned about. On our way back to the ship we had a little extra time and Carlos and Gimer stopped at a little shop and picked us up fresh, hot homemade tortillas to try! The kids thought that was amazing! We would definitely do this tour again, and we would definitely request Carlos and Gimer as our tour guide and driver! They made the trip great!

We went as a group on this tour. (The local operator) did an excellent job making us comfortable and giving us a lot of information about the Mayan Culture. Our guide, Carlos, was wonderful. He made sure we saw all of the highlight of the ruins and explained a lot. The crew made sure we always had enough water as it was warm outside. Make sure you bring bug spray. We did and we didn't have any problems. After seeing the ruins they took us to the Beach for a little over an hour where we shopped and ate and put our feet in the water. We were back in plenty of time to walk around the shops in the port and board the ship without feeling rushed. We enjoyed the whole experience!

This was my first time using this site. It was a little hard to find out where the tour started. We had to go past the security guards at the port. There were 6 of us on the tour. Carlos was our guide. He made the trip very enjoyable. He was well informed and spent time on the drive telling us about the area and the people. My daughter had toured Tulum earlier in the week. She said that this tour was so much better. Her guide had not been as talkative or enthusiastic as Carlos.

My husband and I wanted to tour the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins on our recent visit to Costa Maya on our cruise. We wanted a more private tour than what you can get through the cruise line. I researched and priced a more private tour through the cruise line that ran between $250-$290 USD for the 2 of us. With a little more research I found this tour! This was the best excursion I have been on and was 1/3 the price of the cruise line for both of us! We were met outside the port as described in our email confirmation. The security officer at the port was very nice and confirmed our directions as well. Once arriving at the meeting location we were greeted by Joel. Who had nice cold bottled water for us and we proceeded to be checked in. We waited about 10 minutes for another couple to arrive. Once they were checked in, we got in our nice Air Conditioned Van and met our driver Antoine. Joel was our guide for the day and he was wonderful! He pointed out things of interest along the way to Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. Joel kept us engaged throughout the ride,so the 45 minute drive seemed shorter for sure. He pointed out several villages, including the one he lives in. Beverages offered throughout entire excursion from Joel and Antoine. Joel took us throughout the ruins and did a great job teaching us the history of the site and the history of the Mayan people. There were several large cruise line groups at the time we were there, Joel did a wonderful job keeping us ahead of the groups so we were able to get awesome pictures without other people in them. But we were Not rushed at all!! We even saw some monkeys- Joel pointed out a little baby monkey as well. On our way back we stopped for delicious pineapple on the roadside, make sure you try it with the spicy seasoning. It's excellent, not that spicy. It was very easy to understand Joel throughout the trip. Overall it was a wonderful experience! We basically had a private and very educational tour of the Ruins. There were a total of 4 tourist in our group- myself, my husband, and another married couple. I can not say enough great things about Joel, Antoine, and Costa Maya. If you are in the area, check them out- you won't regret it!! Thanks for a wonderful time Joel and Antoine!!!

The transportation was clean and air conditioned and they were very aware of the time frame we were under to get back to the ship. The only reason my review isn't a 5 star review was because our guide did not speak English very well. He was incredibly hard to understand and would put people on the spot "testing" them on the information he gave us. Our entire group maybe only understood about 1/3 of what he said. He was funny and he tried very hard, but just didn't have the language down well enough. Otherwise the tour was beautiful, took many photos!

This was a fun excursion. I loved all the ruins and the information that was given. However, our guides English was not the best. I wish his English was a little bit better. There were times we had to guess what he was saying as his English was very broken. The guides made sure we were hydrated and when the tour was over gave us the option of going back to the port or taking us to the beach.

The ruins site is well maintained and again our guide very professional in running the tour. Before leaving on the way back to the ship we had the chance to do some shopping. When researching what do to do in Costa Maya for our cruise, I read about the Chacchoben ruins and decided this is what I wanted to see. I was impressed with the tour from start to finish. This was really one of the best excursions I have done. The group was small and not like the "cattle call" giant excursion from the cruise ship. It was a hot day but there were so many shady trees that the heat did not bother us. My only complaint is that I did not bring my bug spray as the website suggested. There were a few mosquitoes but a fellow traveler let me use hers. I highly recommend this trip.
