Experience the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier and Lake from a series of unparalleled vantage points, both on land and water, during this small group, exclusive multi-sport glacial adventure! Please note that the departure time is set according to when your ship arrives. The operator will assign a time that fits best.

A 30-minute transfer by van from your downtown Juneau cruise pier brings you to the Mendenhall Valley and the start of your memorable experience. On the shores of Mendenhall Lake, you will meet your guide to starting the first portion of your adventure - a guided lake canoe. Your guide will help you gear up, give you a safety briefing, and then introduce you to your 8-person (or 12-person) canoe. Each canoe will have 1 to 2 guides per canoe. After some paddling instruction and tips, you are ready for phase one of this multi-sport glacial experience.

Pushing off into the silt-rich lake, you will point your bow in the direction of the mighty Mendenhall Glacier. Your informative guide will give you more information on the awe-inspiring sea of ice that lies ahead of you.

You will paddle past glowing blue icebergs of all shapes and sizes that have broken off the glacier. The silt of the glacier can turn the lake into a mirror and you can often see the reflections of the grand peaks of the Coastal Mountain Range on the surface. Overhead, gulls and arctic terns fly in and out of their nests along the cliffs, and along the shorelines mountain goats, black bears, porcupines, river otters, or sometimes beavers may be spotted. While paddling along the face of the glacier at a safe distance, you will also see the Nugget waterfall cascading down through the forest into the lake.

Near the glacier's edge, you will reach your beach landing point. Once your guide helps you out of your canoe, the adventure continues, as you trade in your paddles for backpacks, micro-spikes, and trekking poles. Following your guide, you will venture to the glacier's edge and onto the ice. Your expert guide will explain the natural history of the area as told by the changing glacial landscape.

Depending on the glacier's condition on the day of your excursion, your guide will choose the safest and most interesting areas to visit. They may include glacial runoff pools and streams and maybe even an ice cave (all dependent on weather conditions, the pace of the group, glacier conditions, etc). The total time including the hike to the glacier is approximately two hours.

After your trek, you will return to your boats and paddle on the lake once more, taking time to experience this out-of-the-ordinary adventure. After paddling back to your put-in location on the shoreline, you will walk to your transportation, which will transfer you back to the Juneau cruise pier. There is a minimum of 4 needed.

Unforgettable Experience!!

We were thrilled with this excursion in every way! From the very start, we were greeted by our friendly guides and were well taken care of the whole time. We felt well-equipped and safe and our guides were very patient with us. They didn't try to push us past our comfort level. This trip does require strength, especially for the paddle portion, and good hiking skills. The effort is well worth it and seeing the ice caves is a treat of a lifetime since they are always changing. We would recommend this company and excursion to all.

Just got back from our HAL Cruise and was anxious to share our experience to everyone!!! First I recommend you to book with anticipation. We booked this in advance through Shore Excursioneer and as I was trying to rebook again for 2019 and I see most of 2018 is already booked! Now that we've experienced this first hand I can understand why this is a famous excursion and this is an experience you do not want to miss. Alaska cruises are a bit pricier but once you are there you will realize it's worth every dime. From all of the cruises we have been on, this was our favorite and we know for sure we will be visiting more often (it was our fist time!). The ride to Mendenhall Lake was filled with interesting stories and beautiful luscious landscape. We arrived to the camp where we met Corey who would be our paddle guide. These guys take safety serious. We received our equipment and safety briefing for the day and paddling lecture. Since there were only 5 of us we all synchronized well and were ready in no time. The canoeing was relaxing and we got to see so much wildlife on our way to the glacier. We stopped to see the mighty Nuggets Falls before we met our second guide for the day, Miles. We felt safe knowing we would be guided by a local expert who knows the area like the back of his hand! He explained what we would do and we began our hike. It was strenuous but well worth it! The caves have this impressive shade of blues and it's just a wonderful experience. We continued hiking until we exited the glacier back to a beach area where the canoes where waiting for us to paddle back to the office. We were given water and snacks to recover. We thanked everyone at (tour operator) for such a wonderful experience and such professionalism carried out throughout the whole trip which is why we will be returning. Our our next trip we will be doing the full day expedition without the canoeing and so anxious! Karla from Shore Excursioneer helped us book and it is also available through the Shore Excursioneer website. Do not hesitate booking this outside your cruise. I recommend Shore Excurioneer as they work with smaller and private tours and have better pricing.

Since we were a large group we were able to stick together and do this amazing tour! We had the best guides ever! It was our first time ever visitng a cold state and Alaska is just so beautiful. The glacier is impressive! This trip was the highlight from our vacation and the kids really enjoyed the hike and experiencing so much wildlife in this reserve. We were lucky enough to spot and take pictures of bears, beavers and just so many things! Loved the waterfalls and the icebergs along the way and got some great shots of those too. Will def want to return.
