Upon meeting the staff near your Livorno cruise port, you will board your air-conditioned luxury coach for the short 60-minute drive to the quaint town of Lucca. While on board you will enjoy free wifi, assistance in English, Italian, and Spanish, and receive a free map for your own personal use. When you arrive in Lucca, the driver will show you exactly where and when to catch the bus. This is a self-guided excursion where you decide what to see in both cities.
Today Lucca, which dates to Roman times and boasts a wealth of medieval and Renaissance churches, towers, piazzas, and one of the best-preserved walls in Europe, likes to market itself as "the city of Puccini". Most of the attractions in Lucca today show its ancient history, from the trace of the Roman amphitheater that can be seen in the shape of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro to the archeological remains under the 12th-century church of Saints Giovanni and Reparata (the first city cathedral, located just around the corner from the present-day cathedral of San Martino), to the various towers and villas from the 12th to 16th centuries. Extraordinarily, as the city grew and modernized, the walls that surrounded the old town were very well maintained. As the walls lost their military importance, the top of the walls became a pedestrian promenade, today one of Lucca's main attractions. You will have approximately 2.5 hours to explore on your self-guided visit.
At the appointed time and location, you will re-board the bus and enjoy a comfortable 30-minute ride to Pisa. With approximately 1.5 hours of free time to wander the city, Piazza dei Miracoli is your best bet. You can start your visit with the Cathedral of Pisa, with its marble facade, adorned by columns and statues. Next, visit the Baptistery or get a classic photo of the Leaning Tower. Finish your visit to the Monumental Cemetery, where you can visit a collection of ancient Roman sarcophaguses and frescoes of the Master of the Triumph of Death. If you have any time remaining you can browse the number of local markets, restaurants, art galleries, and churches to explore and enjoy.
Your return to Livorno is at 04:30 PM, make sure to be on time at the appointed meeting point. Once on board, you can enjoy the scenic trip back to Livorno where you can board your shuttle back to your cruise ship or continue to explore at your own expense and leisure.
Please note: A separate voucher will be emailed to you. You must print the voucher and give it to the local operator in order to do the excursion; do not give them your Shore Excursioneer Eticket.
