Get
ready for a day of spectacular sightseeing including an ascent to the summit of
Mount Isabela de Torres. Then ride the Caribbean's only cable car for the
scenic descent with incredible views. You'll also have the opportunity to see a
historic fortress built in the 16th century and Parque Independencia where you
can take a walk through the Cathedral. In addition to all this, the guide will
provide beverages throughout the excursion including rum punch, local beer,
sodas, or bottled water for your convenience. This is a day you're likely to
never forget.
Start this adventure by meeting your welcome team just outside the Taino Bay
Cruise Center's main gate. Then your English-speaking Taino Bay, Puerto Plata
sightseeing shore excursion guide will escort you to your air-conditioned van,
or mini-bus, for a 30-minute picturesque drive that will be fully narrated.
The summit of Mount Isabela de Torres will take you 2,555 feet above sea level.
You will board the Caribbean's only cable car for a 15-minute slow ride to the
top. This cable car system was inaugurated in 1975, with the construction of
Italian origin, and can carry 17 people. It is moved by an electric hydraulic
system, conducted by a central operator situated in the base station. This
small train is welcoming, with protective glass walls, and offers the visitor a
panoramic view of the city descending from the hill including a garden with 215
features. You will have time at the top to explore a bit with your guide. See
the beautifully kept gardens and a representation of the Christ the Redeemer
Statue, which is an exact replica of the one in Rio de Janeiro, although a bit
smaller. Then you will enjoy the scenic ride back down.
Next, you'll take a 20-minute drive to Fort San Felipe, which is a historic
Spanish fortress that was built in 1577 to protect the city of Puerto Plata
from pirates and other marauders. Here at the oldest surviving structure, your
knowledgeable guide will provide historical facts and its interesting
background. You'll enjoy a short photo op.
Your transportation will with continue for a 10-minute ride to Parque
Independencia where you will receive information about Victorian
architecture. Enter the impressive Cathedral and enjoy more photo
opportunities. Your total time at Parque Independencia will be 30 minutes. At
this point, you'll board your transportation for a 10-minute drive back to Taino
Bay, Puerto Plata, and your cruise ship terminal.
Please note that the cable car descent will depend upon the weather. If there
are high winds a van, or bus, will bring you back down to the base. Finally,
the order of visits may change due to crowds.
View the island from a cable car, explore a lush botanical garden and take in the best highlights of Puerto Plata. A great way to spend the day.
