Originally the small 4th century BC Greek trading colony of Aspalathos, now known as Split, is the second largest city in Croatia. In 1979, the historic center of Split was included into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. There is much to see and do from cultural sites, city highlights and visits to outlying nearby towns. Our Split Highlights Sightseeing Excursion is a great option for visiting two historical centers which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Highlights of the city certainly include the 1700-year-old Diocletian Palace which is visited on our Split Diocletian's Palace Walking Excursion. It is one of the best-preserved buildings from that period. More of a fort than a palace, it was built half as a residence and the rest to house the military garrison. Inside you will find a monumental court, called the Peristyle, a baptistery, once a temple to Jupiter, the Temple of the Aesculapius, sphinxes from Egypt and the synagogue built into the western wall of the Palace. It is Europe's third-oldest synagogue still in use.
The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, built in 305AD as the mausoleum for the emperor, is the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world that remains in use in its original structure. The bell tower from 1100AD that offers incredible views for those able to climb its stairs.
The Riva, or harbor promenade, fronts the Brass Gate to the Palace, numerous cafes and the Republic Square on the west end. Narodni (peoples) Square just outside the Palaces Iron Gate has been the local meeting place since the 1500's. The square is overlooked on one side by a Romanesque clock with the remains of a medieval sundial and flanked by the 15th-century town hall.
If time allows, Split's twisting turning pedestrian streets are a great place to explore, shop and enjoy the city.
