Lush tropical vegetation and countless palm trees surround the outstanding Mayan Ruins of Kohunlich. Located on a hill covered with cohune palms, it derives its name from the English word Cohune Ridge where cohune palms grew.
Your English, speaking, federally certified shore excursion guide will be giving you background information and the history of the area and Mayans. Dating back to 200BC, Kohunlich covers about 21 acres but is mostly un-excavated. There are approximately 200 ruin-mounds that still hold the mysteries inside that the jungle is hiding.
What has been discovered is that the city was engineered with an elaborate channel system to hold rainwater. There are also many raised platforms and pyramids. The most famous structure so far is the Temple of the Masks dating around 500AD. This is a structure with a center staircase leading to the top. To each side of the stairs are enormous stucco masks with human faces. Built in honor of the sun god, there were originally 8 giant masks. Today only 5 stand as 3 masks were somehow looted.
There is an enormous central plaza that is lined with pyramids, temples, an acropolis, and platforms. This is a beautiful sight that remains uncrowded and visitors have not tarnished, or unspoiled by tourism. Your transportation will take you back to your Costa Maya cruise pier afterward.

Where we meet

Cancellation
For the Costa Maya Kohunlich Mayan Ruins Excursion, we issue full refund for your deposit or full payment to us if: Canceled by client prior to excursion date with a minimum of 24 hours prior notice by email to reservations@shoreexcursioneer.com.
For cancellation reasons below, you must contact us via email within 14 days after your excursion:
- Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
- Your ship skips/misses the port.
- Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
- A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
- Cancellations/deposit refund requests that do not comply with the above may not be subject to refund.
- Refunds may be subject to a service charge fee as determined by the payment processor, please refer to Terms and Conditions for more information.
