Italy's third largest city is the capital of Campania and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world dating back to Greek settlements from the Bronze Age.
Despite WWII destruction, Naples still has the largest historic district in Europe as listed by UNESCO on their World Heritage List. It is home to more than 27 centuries of history. Very little survives today of the original Greek city except for parts of the defensive wall. There are more archaeological remains from the Roman Age including cemeteries, catacombs, and buildings. Treasures from the last 2000 years include the Basilica of San Gennaro, the majestic Castello dell’Ovo, the Duomo, the Churches of San Lorenzo Maggiore, San Domenico Maggiore and Santa Chiara, the Castel Nuovo, Castel Capuano, the Palazzo Reale, Piazza del Plebiscito, Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, Teatro di San Carlo, and the church of Sant Elmo.
Underneath Naples, there are the remains of a Greco-Roman theater, Greek and Roman cisterns and aqueducts, used as bomb shelters in WWII. You can see a Roman market, shopping arcade, ancient road, bakery, and communal laundry. In addition, there are Roman thermal baths, a sauna area, ancient churches, and catacombs.
Naples has numerous museums. A must see is the National Archaeological Museum, one of the world’s best collections of Greek and Roman antiquities including the treasures of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Museo di Capodimonte, located in a grand Bourbon palazzo, is the main repository of Neapolitan painting including works by Martini, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, and Bellini.
Neapolitan cuisine is world famous. Naples is the home of the Margarita Pizza, sfogliatelle ricotta-filled pastry, buffalo mozzarella from nearby Aversa, excellent white and red wines and limoncello liquor. To leave without tasting all of these would be ungracious.
Outside of the city center are other must-see destinations. Mount Vesuvius and the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The Archeological Park of Pausilypon, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, The enchanted island of Capri, and The Royal Palace of Caserta to name a few.
